Local List Heritage Handbook

North Somerset has a rich and varied historic environment with many heritage assets listed as part of the statutory list by the Department of Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS). However, there are many other assets which are important to North Somerset’s heritage and are of value to the local street scene and wider landscape.

The council, with assistance from local interest groups, Town and Parish Councils and the public, is compiling a ‘Local List’ in order to highlight buildings, structures and archaeological sites which are of local importance but are not currently designated.

The Local List will be used to identify heritage assets that contribute to the local distinctiveness of North Somerset including those which communities feel should be considered in more detail in the planning process.

We have now drafted a handbook detailing the purpose of the Local List and setting out the criteria for the selection of locally important heritage assets to be added to the first Local List for North Somerset.

Tell us what you think!

We now invite your feedback on our draft handbook and whether you feel the proposed criteria will cover the wide range for heritage assets throughout North Somerset. The criteria will help an independent panel of experts assess if a nominated historic building or archaeological site should be added to the Local List for North Somerset.
