Banwell Bypass and Highway Improvements Consultation

We would like your views on the favoured Banwell bypass route, and on any existing local issues that should be considered and additional proposals and enhancements to reduce impacts of the road for Banwell and the surrounding area.

Funded through Homes England’s Housing Infrastructure Fund, the bypass is set to improve:

  • Traffic flows and longstanding congestion issues through Banwell
  • Traffic noise, air quality and environmental impacts in Banwell
  • Active travel opportunities around the local area

By improving routes around North Somerset, the bypass also stands to offer local people better access to jobs across the region, with a potential boost for the local economy.

The bypass will also unlock land across the region, which may be allocated as part of the local planning process so new and affordable homes can be built for growing families in the years to come.

In the attached documents, you can read background on the scheme, see possible routes and find out about the range of options to alleviate issues in Banwell that we have considered. Please let us now what you think by using the online questionnaire.

Consultation feedback, along with findings from surveys and technical investigations, will help to develop the bypass’ design.

The designs will then be put to an additional public consultation in early 2022 before planning submission.

Scheme Objectives

We will strive to meet our scheme objectives, which are to:

  • Improve the local road network to deal with existing congestion issues.
  • Improve and enhance Banwell’s public spaces by reducing traffic severance and improving the public realm.
  • Provide the opportunity to increase active and sustainable travel between local villages and Weston-super-Mare.
  • Deliver infrastructure that enables housing development (subject to Local Plan).
  • Ensure the development respects the local area and minimises visual impact upon the surrounding countryside and Mendip Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB).
  • Innovative and efficient in reducing and offsetting carbon from the design and construction of the infrastructure.
  • Ensure the development provides the opportunity to increase Bio-Diversity net Gain by at least 10%.
  • Proactively engage with stakeholders in a way that is both clear and transparent.
