4.17 According to this policy, new residential development within the service villages should be: 'located within the settlement boundaries, and be of an appropriate design, scale, character and type. Such development will only be acceptable where it will maintain or improve self-containment, support the retention of existing services or fulfil an identified housing need'.

4.18 Whilst the requirement for good design is welcomed, concerns are raised on the basis that the policy does not differentiate between the different roles of the service villages.

4.19 Whilst the policy allows development commensurate to the needs of the villages, to ensure that sufficient development takes place, the policy should differentiate between the differing roles of the villages. Some villages such as Long Ashton are subject to greater development needs due their proximity and functional relationship with nearby SSCTs.
