By implementing such a policy, however, the Core Strategy must recognise that some development will be required on greenfield sites within, and adjoining, the main towns and service villages.Re-emphasise that there is no policy backing, at a regional or national level, for designating new Green Belt land purely to compensate for other areas that are being removed from the designation. |

This policy reflects the value and importance of the Green Belt. Although we would recommend it include recognition of the positive role that Green Belts have to play in fulfilling a number of land use objectives as described in PPS2: Green Belts.

The HCA accepts that it is unlikely that all development identified for North Somerset over the
next 20 years will be able to be realistically delivered on previously developed sites, therefore
it is accepted that there may be a need for Greenfield sites to come forward for consideration.

It is vital, we believe, that there is a sequential approach to development with brownfield sites being developed before Green Belt land, and agricultural land, of whatever quality, last. |

The Strategy itself is silent on extending the Green Belt but does refer to the proposed extension to south west Nailsea in the 2006 draft Regional Spatial Strategy which has been removed in the current revision. |

We strongly support the North Somerset position on Green Belt as at 3.105. We are concerned about the debate in Chapter 5 if this arises and have concerns on the latest draft Green Belt assessment analysis which appears to underestimate the value of Green Belt, countryside and setting around Barrow Gurney, Barrow Hospital and the Barrow Reservoirs. We are concerned about the possible implications of this, and will comment further. |

Support for the restrictive nature of the policy in general but it needs to make the necessary revisions to the Green Belt to accommodate the SWB extension. It needs to be augmented by an additional paragraph in the policy that positively directs new development to sites in the Area of Search for the SWBUE, particularly those which offer wide ranging sustainability benefits.

I am pleased that North Somerset is not in agreement with the South Bristol Urban Extension. The Green Belt boundary should not be altered, and should be protected at all costs. There should be no developments on it at all. I am opposed to any roads built on Green Belt land and also no expansion to Bristol airport.
