We agree that "a net loss of biodiversity should be avoided". However, to meet the requirements of PPS 9: Biodiversity and Geological Conservation we recommend " and a net increase in biodiversity should be achieved" after "a net loss of biodiversity should be avoided."

We strongly support policy CS4. Principle 4 should incorporate the new super pond for WSM, as provision of new green infrastructure.

Para 3.64 - The Severn Estuary is now a Special Area of Conservation (not proposed SAC or cSAC). It must be noted that Ramsar and SAC designations do not just refer to birds but include habitats and other species.

The Trust appreciates detailed CS4: Pleased that this is given so much prominence in the core strategy. Recommend strengthening (1) to (3) by omitting 'seeking to' and inserting (1) 'meeting local, regional...'; (2) 'ensuring that new development is...'; and (3) 'protecting and enhancing important habitats'.
Reinforce paras 3.75 and 3.86 by emphasising that development should result in net gain, ensuring conformity with regional and national policy. Would welcome seeing the GI strategy.

Hedgerows are mentioned as important habitats. North Somerset Council's current management of hedgerows shows a lack of sensitivity to their wildlife and aesthetic value. Good practice guidelines for hedgerow management are available and should be adhered to if the council is serious about its commitment towards enhancing biodiversity, as stated in this document.

This policy is positively supported. The Council is pleased to see that North Somerset's wildlife habitats and species are recognised as 'outstanding', reflecting our own valuation, especially of this parish. In particular, we note the positive references to the biodiversity value of designated Wildlife Sites, woodland generally and trees throughout the district, together with formal recognition of NSC's duties under the NERC Act 2006, which relate to the conservation of biodiversity.

North Somerset is notable for its concentrations of woodland, particularly ancient
woodland, and policy CS4 recognises their importance. The FC will continue to
promote the sustainable management of woodlands in North Somerset, and the
creation of new woodlands in the right place. The FC will also continue to work with
the Council to manage its own woodland resource.

Very pleased with criteria 3 and 5, but they could be even better as:
3'Promoting a significant increase in native woodland creation and encouraging retention of trees, with view to enhancing biodiversity, having regard to Biodiversity and Trees SPD and UKBAP habitat targets';

Encouraged by seriousness of approach of council re amelioration, given unavoidable devaluing of biodiversity and scenic value of countryside arising from housing development, high levels of which are required in North Somerest by the government.
