Local Plan 2038: Challenges for the Future What should be our aims? Question 12

Build sustainable development? We question the figures of 1400 homes per year as this does not take into account retail and office space being made redundant and the figures of an aging and dying population after 2038 Regeneration is an aim that we support. We also question whether North Somerset is really the best place to build a lot of the proposed dwellings.Wiltshire & Gloucestershire may be more appropriate as 40% of North Somerset in on a floodplain and already has significant development

Yes, providing they are applied to the whole authority, not just Weston-super-Mare.

BAL welcomes the aims identified in the Challenges Document. BAL considers that the aims would, however, be strengthened if a specific aim relating to enhancing the connectivity of the district (both physically and virtually) was included.

We agree that the suggested 'Aims and Objectives' statements form a basis for the proposed 2038 Local Plan.

The biggest planning issues affecting our community are the need to protect the current way of life and rural amenity, and the vast majority wish to prevent the expansion of Bristol Airport.

There are many assumptions in here which are aspirational and making decisions based on aspiration rather than reality is dangerous.

All of these aims are laudable in themselves but the real issue is developing robust criteria for their implementation. For example a criterion could be to undertake a meaningful Green Belt review. One of the real concerns of HM Planning Inspectorate in their criticism of the JSP was the failure of NSC to undertake an adequate Green Belt review. In the absence of a robust criteria the aims could become badly skewed and lead to policies which would be damaging to the environment.

All six aims would be shared by residents and businesses in our Area, but we would stress that the ‘Regenerate our Towns and Communities’ aim has particular relevance to the need to upgrade the Pill Precinct and improve its amenity and accessibility.
