Local Plan 2038: Challenges for the Future Challenge 6: The future role of the Green Belt Question 9

It is accepted that there will need to be some sustainable development within the existing Green Belt in North Somerset. We strongly contend that the basic tenet of the Green Belt must be retained to provide a clear gap and open countryside between the higher density urban development of Bristol and the rural settlements of North Somerset. Any developments might add to but should not alter the character of those rural settlements.

In order to properly consider the Local Plan, North Somerset Council must look at a complete review of the Green Belt across the authority area.

Only when all brownfield sites have been explored and exhausted, including redundant office & retail spaces. People value undeveloped land outside green belt as much as the green belt itself.

We value the Green Belt, and do not see the need to adjust its boundary

In our response to the Pre-Commencement Document, we set out the exceptional circumstances that establish the need for changes to the Green Belt boundary in respect of Bristol Airport.

Yes, if really necessary - and community benefits really outweigh the 'costs'. For example, poor agricultural and amenity land exists north of the A370 - A38 link road on the Bristol boundary. The feasibility needs to be carefully tested, and should not be based on 'quick' profits; We shouldn't just think in terms of 'shrinking' the existing boundary; We could consider increasing the Green Belt area to the South of Bristol, in order to reduce it in specific locations elsewhere.

Priority should be given to strategic development sites outside of the Green Belt.

No, unless you are intending to extend the boundary?
